WG3 Work undertaken by CEN / TC260 / Working Group 3 since its formation in 1991

Standards relevant to Liming Materials. These Standards have been produced as European Standards and adopted as British Standards.

BS EN 12945 : 2008 The determination of the Neutralising Value of liming materials. This standard had a corrigendum added to correct the formula used for the expression of results. The standard does not apply to liming materials with a P2O5 content greater than 3%. Currently a new Work Item has been introduced to enable the standard to apply to liming materials with a P2O5 content greater than 3%.

BS EN 13535 The classification of Liming Materials

BS EN 14069 A description and minimum requirements for liming materials.

BS EN 12944 Part 3 A vocabulary of terms applicable to liming materials

BS EN 12946 The determination of the calcium and magnesium content of liming materials by complexometry

BS EN 12947 The determination of the magnesium content of liming materials by atomic absorption spectrometry.

BS EN 12948 The determination of the size distribution of liming materials by wet and dry sieving.

BS EN 13971 : 2008 The determination of the Reactivity of liming materials using hydrochloric acid. Currently this standard does not apply to silicate liming materials, but work is in progress to widen the scope of the standard to include silicates.

BS EN 12048 The determination of the moisture content of liming materials.

BS EN 14397 - Part 2 The determination of the CO2 content of liming materials.

BS EN 13475 The determination of the calcium content of liming materials by the oxalate method

BS EN 14948 The determination of the product impact on soil pH. A soil incubation method.

BS EN 15704 : 2008 The determination of the breakdown of the granules of granular liming materials.

Work Item 00260 133 The determination of the dust content of granular liming materials both before and after simulated handling conditions. Because of the lack of precision date this Work Item has been approved as a Technical Specification.

Work Item 00260 134 The determination of the amount of residual finely ground carbonate in soils. Because of the lack of precision data this Work Item has been approved as a Technical Specification.

Work Item 00260 049 A guide to the determination of the lime requirement of soils. This Work Item is now CEN / TS 15048 : 2008 a Technical Report and the future of this report will be discussed within a year.

Work Item 00260 137 The determination of the Reactivity of Liming Materials by automatic titration with citric acid. The work on this proposed standard has been completed and has been sent for CEN enquiry.

Work to determine the crushing strength of the granules of granular liming materials was undertaken and several methods examined and tested. An electronic method has been produced but as yet there has been insufficient interest to produce it commercially or to take the work further.

The Harmonisation of European Liming Materials within the framework of the European Fertiliser Regulations 2003/2003. WG3 has put forward proposals for the description and specification of a range of liming materials to be included in the schedule of European Fertilisers in a revised European Fertiliser Regulation 2003/2003. The Fertiliser Working Group meets in December 2011 to consider the progress of the revision of the Regulation 2003/2003 and will be examining these proposals.

A method to determine the difference between chalk and limestone was developed as part of the specifications listed in the schedule of liming materials within the proposals for the harmonisation of European Liming Materials A First Working Draft has been produced, and a decision to proceed to produce this method as a standard is required.

Existing European and British Standards are reviewed every five years and part of the work of the Working Group is to review standards relevant to liming materials and to comment upon their accuracy, effectiveness and relevance.

Recently reviewed Standards include BS EN 12946, BS EN 12947 and BS EN 14397 Part 2 , all of which were confirmed and remain as current standards.
